Simple personal development goals for 2023

Personal Development is the key to getting as much out of life as possible. When you develop a personal development mindset, you can greatly increase your expectations for a better life. My top 10 personal development goals are listed below, along with my current thoughts on each . . .

1 - Read self help books - I am currently reading the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. I wish I would have read this book years ago. If you can control your habits, you will control your life. This book talks about all the ways in which you can develop good repeatable habits that you will eventually do instinctively without thinking about. One good habit can change your life. Imagine having 2, 3 or more good habits that you've consciously engrained into your life!

You can check out this book on Amazon at the following link:

2 - Define your core values - Decide in advance the values that want your life to be about. Write them down. Mine are Integrity, Optimism, Courage, Encouragement and Knowledge (they spell the acronym IOCEK, which I use to help me remember them).

Check out my list of core values that you can select for yourself at . . . https://www.100goalsclub.com/what-are-core-values.html

3 - Attend personal development seminars and workshops - Kathy and I are planning to attend a seminar this year. If you have any ideas of good ones, let me know. I found that Tony Robbins is hosting a series of Life and Wealth Mastery seminars in FIJI in 2023. Very tempting!

4 - Develop a daily Power Hour - This should be done at the beginning of each day, before your day gets away from you. There are so many ways to build your power hour. For me currently, it involves stretching, exercise, goal review, task review, and a process called commit to 3. See below for more on this.

5 - Find a mentor - If you don't have someone you currently consider to be a mentor for you, you are missing out. There are numerous ways to find your own mentor, whether or not you actually meet them in person or not. Check out my link for ideas for you . . .

6 - Learn continuously - Learning should not end with graduating from school, college or university. Try and learn something every day. I learn primarily through reading, listening to podcasts and watching YouTube videos.

7 - Develop your positive attitude - A glass half full is much better than a glass half empty, even though they contain the same amount. It is how you respond and think about things that happen to you that determine whether you have a positive mindset or not. Work really hard to ensure you look at things with a positive mindset. I'm convinced the people with a positive mindset and attitude live longer and live a happier life.

8 - Develop your communication skills - People with great communication skills will outperform others in most areas of life, especially career. Unfortunately with so much dependance on social media for communicating, people are loosing their ability to communicate with others first hand and in person.

9 - Write your life purpose - While you can life a good life without having written out your life purpose, imagine how impactful your life could be if you thought about what you want your life to be about. Write it down. But don't worry about changing what you write down the road. Your life purpose can be something you update every year or every 5 years, when ever you feel the need to pivot.

10 - Discover your spirituality - Some people live a life very centred on their spirituality. Me . . I'm still discovering what this means for me. If you already have this area of your figured out, good for you.

Goal Achievement Tip - COMMIT TO 3

COMMIT TO 3 THINGS EACH DAY . . .

to ensure you get the important things done, not just the urgent! OF ALL MY GOAL SETTING TIPS, THIS CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS the MOST

It is most important that you are continually progressing towards the achievement of worthwhile goals. The best way to do this is to decide, at the beginning of each day, what the 3 most important things are that you will do today that will move you forward.

If you just let your day unfold without prioritizing these 3 things, you will drift. Management of your time, and putting in quality time into the things that matter, is going to be key to your successful achievement of your 100 goals.

Read books on how to manage your time. It really comes down to being able to prioritize your time and ensure, every day, you are putting time into the things that matter most.

I'm currently using my "REMINDERS" application on my MAC, with a dedicated LIST titled "COMMIT to 3", where each day I make sure I have 3 "commits" for the day. I also have an "APP" called "Commit To 3" which I've downloaded and use which is very helpful as well.

Working on your most important goals, every day, is the most powerful thing you can do!

See below on "How to get stuff done" on how this works into a daily routine . . .

This is a screen shot of the Commit to 3 app. Check it out at the following site:

How to get stuff done

As part of my 2023 goal setting, I've setup a new personal system to getting stuff done.

Using the REMINDERS app on my Mac, synced with my desktop, iPhone and iPad, I use the following system for completing goals and tasks, creating and completing TASKS within the following LIST framework:

DO LIST (Master) - We keeping a running list of "TO DO" items, adding things to do to this list as we think of them. This list will typically include more than 30 things . . .

DO LIST (Home / Cottage / Rentals) - I keep a separate list of tasks that involve home maintenance and renovation tasks for our home, cottage and 3 rental properties.

RECURRING - This is a separate list of tasks that are completed each week as recurring tasks. (i.e. Read a chapter, Music Practice, House Purging, Storyworth entry etc.)

THIS WEEK (Tasks) - On Monday mornings during our weekly planning session (Kathy and I), we review our "TO DO LISTS" and decide which specific "tasks" to do during the week.

THIS WEEK (Goals) - During these Monday morning planning meetings, while looking at our ANNUAL GOALS and using our Goal Setting Worksheet (the one you received when you signed up), we enter in tasks that will help us complete or contribute towards achieving our annual goals based on what we deem most important for what is going on in our life right now.

TODAY'S TASKS - Each morning, I list out the tasks to be completed today, taking from the THIS WEEK (Tasks) completed on Monday morning.

COMMIT TO 3 - Each morning, we list out the tasks to be completed today. This should be the high importance tasks that relate to your annual goals or something important that otherwise might not get done if not committed to.

We've been using this system in various forms for years, and more specifically as detailed above since January 1, 2023 and have found it to be extremely productive.

Feel free to use, modify, adapt to suit your own purpose. For instance, you could develop something like this for your Career/work life and for your personal/family life.

Send me an email to bklodt@cogeco.ca for questions or comments on what system you use.

Next newsletter . . .

My next newsletter will be on March 1st 2023 where I will discuss the importance of Health along with my top recommendations for 2023!
