93 - Donate to charities . . . to help those less fortunate in need!

Reason for this Goal:   Charity donations and helping others less fortunate than ourselves is a great way to live.  There are millions, and perhaps billions, of people in this world who are living life without what we consider to be essential necessities for living a good life.   Often, we forget about the people that need help in our very own community.

Charity donations that will make a big impact!

Some of the top charities to donate to that you can support to make charity donations include:

  • United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) – helping defend the rights of children across 190 countries
  • Human Rights Watch – Reporting on human rights conditions, in some 90 countries, to press for changes in policy and practice that promote human rights and justice around the world
  • Doctors Without Borders – Medical aid where it is needed most
  • American Red Cross – Responding to people in crisis, from small house fires to multi-state natural disasters throughout the US
  • Green Peace – An independent, global campaigning organization that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment (climate change, forests, oceans)
  • United Way – Improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good
  • World Vision – A global relief, development, and advocacy organization, partnering with children, families, and their communities to reach their full potential by tacking the causes of poverty and injustice
  • Make A Wish – To grant the wish of every child diagnosed with a critical illness
  • And hundreds more organizations supporting everything from health research to religious donations, to funding to support the homeless.

Donating money is a very personal decision, with no right or wrong amount.  The average amount donated is reported to be in the range of 3% to 5% of one’s net or gross income.

Suggested Goal(s):    Donate 3% of your income, annually, to the charities of your choice.
Your Outrageous Goal:   Donate 10% or more of your income, annually, to the charities of your choice.

Many live in an affluent community; however, there are neighborhoods and people who struggle among us, who are not visible to many and go unnoticed.  Through our support of organizations like United Way, there are numerous local community groups that get supported financially to make a real difference.

One of the organizations that we continue to support through workplace donations (payroll deduction) is United Way, as they support so many different local community groups in need.

We also sponsored for many years a child in Ghana through the World Vision program. We received information periodically throughout the year about the good use that our charity donations were being used for. It was a teaching moment for our children to see us supporting such an important cause.
