4 - Develop a Power Hour . . . to give your day the best start!

Reason for this Goal and what is a power hour:   A power hour is the best way for you to spend the first hour of each day. Most, if not all, successful people have morning rituals before they get on to their day. Many successful people practice a 5am wake-up and acknowledge this practice as key to their success.

Establish a goal to develop your own morning rituals filled with things that align best with you, your personality and your ultimate goals.

What is a power hour and what do you do during it?

A power hour is a ritual that you perform over the course of one hour dedicated to giving yourself the best start (or end) to a day!

Examples of actions that could comprise your Power Hour include:

  • Aerobics
  • Deep breathing
  • Goal planning
  • High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
  • Jogging
  • Journaling
  • Meditation
  • Reflection
  • Running
  • Tai Chi or Yoga
  • Visualization
  • Walking
  • Weight lifting
  • Writing

My power hour begins at 5am, which I do 5 days/week, vacation time excluded.  It includes 20 to 30 minutes of exercise, 10 minutes of journaling, and 10 minutes of either writing, goal planning, or contemplative thinking.

My wife Kathy and I do either aerobics,  high intensity interval training, weight lifting or a brisk morning walk at 5:30 each week day (we take weekends off).   It is an important part of our daily morning ritual and defining for us what is a power hour.

Ask people what they do in the morning and if they have their own version of a power hour. It reveals a lot about a person. They way you start your day tells a lot about you and will set you up for having a successful day, no matter what else happens.

One of my personal development mentors is Robin Sharma, the # 1 Bestselling author of The Monk who Sold His Ferrari.  In late 2018, Robin published a new book completely focused on how to develop your Power Hour, called The 5AM Club, Own your Morning, Elevate your Life.  The book is written as a story about an Entrepreneur, an Artist and a Billionaire.  If you really want to get serious about understanding what is a power hour and using your mornings and changing your life, this is a highly recommended book.

Visit Robin Sharma's website here for more information on this and other books.  I have personally read several of his books and I've found them all highly inspirational.  Below is a list of all the books he has authored:

  • The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari
  • The Greatness Guide
  • The Leader who had No Title
  • Family Wisdom
  • Who Will Cry when You Die

Robin is one of the biggest proponents of developing morning rituals to completely change and empower your life.

Suggested Target Goal:   Develop the habit of a Power Hour.

Outrageous Goal:  Continue the Power Habit, every day of the week, for life.

This is such an important topic that many other self help gurus like Robin Sharma have written books and devote significant time during personal development seminars into explaining the merits of developing your own power hour and really understanding what is a power hour.
